17 classes of the Koppenplatz elementary school visited the exhibition “Cindy Sherman – Works from the Olbricht Collection” and dealt with the artistic work of Cindy Sherman, participating in not only theoretical but also practical workshops.

During the theoretical part of the workshop, the young pupils were faced with various social roles and existing clichés that the photographer slips in to unveil and unmask the same. Simultaneously the pupils were asked to reflect on their own environment: Do we also know people like this? What’s behind the mask, the facial expression, the costume? Many children responded with very creative associations to these questions, reflecting their own everyday life, the mass media or films.

The task of the second and practical part of the workshop was, to slip into a role themselves using costumes and make-up, glasses and wigs, inspired by the work of Cindy Sherman. The kids turned into witches, princesses, clowns and boys became girls.

The exhibition “Zu Besuch bei Cindy Sherman” (“Visiting Cindy Sherman”) documents this process of analysis/exploration and implementation. Put closely together, the vast number of photos of the pupils self-fashioning, create a kind of hidden object game which fascinates as much by the repetition as well as each child’s individual expression captured in each single photo.
